Becoming a medical transcriptionist can be a great way to establish a career in the growing health care industry. Medical careers are growing by leaps and bounds and the demand for highly trained medical transcriptionists is strong and getting stronger. By attending a medical transcripion training course you are positioning yourself for a long and full career full of options and with the potential of receiving a high salary.
What is involved in medical transcription training?
How and what you will learn during your medical transcriptionist training course will vary somewhat from school to school and depend on what format your course takes: online, classroom, correspondence, etc. but in general, any medical transcription training you undergo should teach you the basics about being a medical transcriptionist including basic medical terminology, how to use the required equipment, how to do medical editing and train you how to work with professionals from a variety of specialties.
Why should you attend medical transcriptionist training?
While it’s possible to become a medical transcriptionist without any formal medical transcriptionist training, the medical transcriptionist salary earned by those who have undergone formal training can be significantly higher than those who don’t. Attending training will also let you hone your skills while someone is available to correct your mistakes and teach you tricks to make better use of your time and skills. Additionally, while in medical transcription training you will have the opportunity to network and build connections with other transcriptionists which can help you while you are looking for a medical transcriptionist job or if you decide to start your own company.
What type of medical transcriptionist training is available?
There are three main types of medical transcription courses available:
- Classroom medical transcriptionist courses: These take place on a school campus where you attend classes at specific times on specific days. These types of medical transcription courses offer the best opportunities for networking but for those who are pursuing medical transcripion training while working at another job, the set schedule may be hard to follow and one of the other options may be more appropriate.
- Online medical transcription courses: An online medical transcription course takes place completely virtually. Depending on the school, you may interact with fellow students and your instructor via email or message boards but in general you will do all of the work independently. These types of courses are great for people who need to be able to study at their own pace and on their own schedule. The disadvantages of an online medical transcriptionist course are that you don’t get to network and, since you’re only accountable to yourself for the amount of time you dedicate to your studies you have to be responsible for motivating yourself.
- Medical transcription training via correspondence: Correspondence schools are less popular than they used to be with the increase in online training but they are still available and still a good choice for those who need to work at their own pace and my not be comfortable with the technology involved in an online course or who may be unable to use it for whatever reason. Correspondence courses have the same advantages and disadvantages of online medical transcription courses.
